Excel and GAIL ODATA

On the morning of November 2 DAR IT will make a configuration change to GAIL which could impact users utilizing GAIL OData connections. The configuration change is to improve the security of GAIL by disabling the deprecated TLS 1.0 encryption protocol and force all connections to modern encryption protocols in accordance with published best practices.

Specifically, this change will cause OData connections from versions of Microsoft Excel prior to Office 2019 and Office 365 to stop working.

If you utilize Microsoft Excel to access GAIL OData and DAR IT does not manage your computer, we HIGHLY recommend you forward this communication to your IT staff immediately so they can evaluate and plan for the change prior to November 2. If your IT team determines upgrading the version of Microsoft Office is not feasible for your device, a configuration change on your computer can get connections working again. If your IT team determines you are in this situation, please have your IT staff contact Brantley Hobbs (brantley.hobbs@uga.edu) for information on how to make the configuration change. The change requires administrative access on the computer and is a non-trivial change, so this is not something you can do without your IT team’s assistance.

As always, please reach out to askit@uga.edu if you have questions or if we can be of service. And of course, reach out to Jeff Garmon directly as needed.
